According to Sberindex , growth in nominal consumer expenses continued to slow down in August to 13.6 %, after 15 % in July and more than 16 % in April – May . The average daily consumption rate almost reached the historical maximum of December 2023 . At the same time , the share of non-food expenses in the structure of consumer spending was almost equal to the level of the year before , but remained significantly lower than in 2021 .
As a result of the first 8 months of 2024 , the total turnover of retail trade , catering and commercial public services increased by 15.5 % compared to the previous year . At the same time , retail trade turnover in nominal terms increased by 16.1 % over the period , slowing down by 0.4 p . p ., but still significantly outpacing inflation . Over the last 12 months , the growth rate of overall consumption decreased by 0.4 p . p .
Spending on non-food products in January – August 2024 , despite the slowdown in recent months , provided about 42 % of total expenses growth . At the same time , for the second month in a row , the outpacing growth of expenses for food products ( compared to non-food products ) allows us to project further levelling of the influence of macro-segments , taking into account the high comparison base at the end of 2023 for non-food products and decreasing interest in large purchases .
Alfa-Bank analysts estimate that January – August 2024 will bring about 64 % of the nominal annual amount of consumer spending . This is approximately 0.5 p . p . above the seasonal average , primarily due to the rapid growth of spending on non-food goods and services in the first months of 2024 .
Attitude towards major purchases
In the August survey , the Institute of the Public Opinion Foundation ’ s evaluation of the favourable moment for major purchases remained stable , staying above the level of the previous year . The peak value in June , which became the highest since 2014 , was a short-term reaction to the increased sanctions pressure . As the information coverage decreased , the share of respondents with a neutral position increased .
At the same time , the highest share of consumers who are neutral about the rationality of large purchases is among the most affluent respondents and in cities with a population of over 100,000 people .
According to NIQ ’ s alternative assessment , younger consumers are the most shopping-minded . The proportion of those who consider the current moment appropriate for such purchases is 48 % across the entire sample , and 56 % and 58 % in the 18-24 and 25- 34 age groups , respectively .
Market drivers : technology
In August , the growth of sales of technical goods continued to slow down . This was due to a decrease in consumers ’ willingness to make large purchases in the context of high interest rates and the strengthening of the high base effect . At the beginning of the month ,
